The publication is an anthology of articles and texts exploring aspects (genres, periods and forms) of performance art in Ireland, from the 1970's to the present day including the arrival of Joseph Beuys in 1974. The publication's focus is on documenting artists and practices that reflect embodied live performance art and exploring a history in the knowledge that histories are diverse and multiple. The publication attempts a survey acknowledging that omissions and oversights are inevitable. To ameliorate this a chronology of Irish performance artists and major events, projects, festivals and exhibitions is included. This has been populated through a public call out and response and with assistance from the National Irish Visual Artists Library. This chronology or timeline is incorporated into the publication's visual design and includes a listing of significant performance and live art events, festivals, platforms and individual artists as they appeared or created public performances for the first time. This publication is the first critical overview of this field of art practice in Ireland and its aim is to be as inclusive as possible, celebrating the originality, scope and diversity of performance practice in Ireland over 4 decades but it will not claim to be a comprehensive survey and will the first attempt at an overview encouraging further and future research and appraisals.
